Stocks rise, Nasdaq outperforms as strong earnings offset economic fears

Elva Mankin

Stocks extended gains Friday morning, with the Nasdaq jumping about 1%, after a slew of better than expected corporate earnings results from major tech firms. Each of Facebook, Amazon, Apple and Netflix hit record highs shortly after market open.

Tech titans Facebook (FB), Amazon (AMZN), Apple (AAPL), and Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL), each reported quarterly results that blew past estimates Thursday evening, affirming these companies’ pandemic-era dominance following a steep run-up in tech stocks over the past couple months.

Facebook grew its revenue 11% over last year as its advertising business remained resilient despite the pandemic-related slowdown across the broader ad industry. Alphabet’s ad business was hit more prominently by that trend, with Google ad revenue falling 8% over last year, though Alphabet’s overall top- and bottom-line results still topped estimates. Facebook’s daily active users jumped 13% to 1.79 billion and monthly active users rose 12% to 2.7% billion as the

Tech sector earnings are entering their heaviest period and there’s sure to be much to say about them. One thing’s for sure, this should be a big quarter for many players because a truly large number of companies have benefited from the pandemic-induced changes in behavior. 5 Things to Look Out for in Energy Earnings This Season

Elva Mankin

The second-quarter earnings season for Oils-Energy got underway today with oilfield service giant Halliburton HAL reporting results. Collapsing commodity prices and demand are likely to have played foul on the sector’s top and bottom lines with negative growth expected on both fronts. While things started getting bad toward the end of the first quarter, the full impact of the coronavirus pandemic and the oil price slump may only have been felt in the April-June period when crude plunged into negative territory briefly. Amid expectations of dismal data, investors will also be looking for early signs of a rebound for the remainder of 2020.

Over the next month or so, as we make our way through the earnings deluge, here are five things to look for:

Comparison With the Year-Ago Period:

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, in April, May and June of 2019, the average monthly WTI crude price

ETFs to Buy as Netflix Tops Disney Ahead of Q2 Earnings

Elva Mankin

Netflix NFLX is set to release second-quarter 2020 results on Jul 16 after market close. Being the world’s largest video streaming company, it is worth taking a look at its fundamentals ahead of the results.

The stock has jumped more than 73% since mid-March and 19.6% over the past three months, outperforming the industry’s average growth of 16.2%. In fact, Netflix shares have seen a remarkable rally of 29% over the past 10 trading days that has pushed up its market valuation to $250 billion. The surge makes Netflix more valuable than Walt Disney DIS, AT&T T, Verizon Communications VZ and Comcast CMCSA.

The outperformance is expected to continue given that the company has strong chances of beating estimates and witnessed positive earnings estimate revisions, which are generally a precursor to an earnings beat.

Earnings Whispers

Netflix has a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) and an Earnings ESP of +2.27%. According
